n late June of 1908, a fireball exploded above the remote Russian forests of Tunguska, Siberia, flattening more than 800 square miles of trees. Researchers think a meteor was responsible for the devastation, but neither its fragments nor any impact craters have been discovered.
Astronomers have been left to guess whether the object was an asteroid or a comet, and figuring out what it was would allow better modeling of potential future calamities.
Italian researchers now think they’ve found a smoking gun: The 164-foot-deep Lake Cheko, located just 5 miles northwest of the epicenter of destruction.

Zend Technologies will offer the 1.0 version of its framework for PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) Web application development, which in pre-release forms has attracted more than 1 million downloads, on Monday.
Zend Framework 1.0 will not be the only PHP development framework around as it will share the scene with frameworks like Cake and Prado. But Zend’s is the first framework with support from a corporate entity and relevant contributions from companies like IBM and Google, Zend said.
“It’s an application framework for building high-quality Web applications and Web services with PHP,” said Andi Gutmans, CTO and co-founder of Zend.

Graphics: Virtual Rome: What the great city looked like back in the day…

A ten year collaboration among UCLA, the University of Virginia and the Politecnico de Milano produced Rome Reborn 1.0, a virtual 3D model of the city of Rome as it looked on June 21, 320 A.D.The group studied information available on Rome’s topography, urban infrastructure, buildings and monuments, then filled in the rest using digital reconstructions.
If 4th Century Rome had Google, this is what the city would have looked like on Google maps.

The Telcos have become the biggest obstacle to the development of new technologies and services. They have become the most backward elements in our society when it comes to rolling out new technologies, applications, and services.
They have filed lawsuits to stop public wireless networks, and they constantly seek to control anything that could threaten their markets. They maintain the digital divide by keeping Internet access prices far higher than they should be.
They control the cell phone and all of its features, disabling built-in functions when it suits them. And they control the services can be offered over their networks.
They don’t compete against each other, their pricing is almost identical, almost cartel-like. The only competitive activity they engage in is in advertising campaigns.

Security: Attractive Polish Security Researcher, Joanna Rutkowska, Faces “Malware” Challenge

Rutkowska faces ‘100% undetectable malware’ challenge

At last year’s Black Hat security conference, stealth malware researcher Joanna Rutkowska caused a stir with the introduction of Blue Pill, a new technology she claims can create malware that remains “100 percent undetectable.”
This year, a group of her peers will challenge Rutkowska to prove it, arguing that a 100% undetectable rootkit is absolutely impossible.
The challenge is being laid out by Thomas Ptacek (left), co-founder of Matasano Security, Nate Lawson of Root Labs and Symantec’s Peter Ferrie — three high-profile researchers out to prove that virtual machine rootkits (malicious hypervisors) are actually easier to detect than normal rootkits.
The challenge will closely resemble the CanSecWest MacBook takeover contest won by Dino Dai Zovi — two untouched laptops of the make/model of Rutkowska’s choosing will be provided for her to plant Blue Pill on one.

Introduction
Some time ago, early in 2005, our rather small (7 person) company felt that it was in the need to somehow collect, document and hopfully bill the support requests we got for our many applications and websites we have created for our customers.
Of course, I did some research about free/inexpensive applications. I found nothing suitable (probably every programmer behaves that way when searching for apps he could develop by himself). Then I search some more and still found nothing.

Code Project; Tools & Code: NDoc may be gone but ImmDOC may take its place

ImmDoc .NET – a tool for generating HTML documentation

Introduction
Do you remember Visual Studio 2003 and its nice feature of generating HTML documentation for your projects? I bet many of you do and just like I do, you miss it now because unfortunately in Visual Studio 2005 it’s no longer present.
Recently, I needed such functionality to document a .NET library I’ve been developing and just couldn’t find the right tool to do the job. I’m aware of the existence of NDoc, but as far as I know it’s quite dormant these days and it lacks support for .NET Framework 2.0. So I decided to spare some time to develop such a tool by myself, hoping that I would learn something new and that it’ll be useful not only for me, but also for other programmers out there.

Financial: Bank for International Settlements Warns of Potential Depression

BIS warns of Great Depression dangers from credit spree

The Bank for International Settlements, the world’s most prestigious financial body, has warned that years of loose monetary policy has fuelled a dangerous credit bubble, leaving the global economy more vulnerable to another 1930s-style slump than generally understood.
“Virtually nobody foresaw the Great Depression of the 1930s, or the crises which affected Japan and Southeast Asia in the early and late 1990s. In fact, each downturn was preceded by a period of non-inflationary growth exuberant enough to lead many commentators to suggest that a ‘new era’ had arrived”, said the bank.
The BIS, the ultimate bank of central bankers, pointed to a confluence a worrying signs, citing mass issuance of new-fangled credit instruments, soaring levels of household debt, extreme appetite for risk shown by investors, and entrenched imbalances in the world currency system.
